Today, I run GoSquared, a real-time analytics service with my 2 co-founders. We have over 30,000 businesses using us for analytics.

We actually got started a long time ago while we were at school (when we were ~15 years old). We were engineers who thought we could make an advertising platform, but what we actually found was that people only wanted a small part of our platform - the analytics part.

So after a few weeks, we made the tough call to scrap everything but the analytics component, and put up a very basic pricing page to see who'd bite. Within a day we had our first paying customer. Within 2 days we had our first 3.

If you have free users, don't ask people if they'll pay. Put a price up and charge them.
